Calligraphy by Emiko
I am a calligrapher in Monterey, California. I started studying western calligraphy 30 years ago in Japan because I had a desire to create beautiful messages in Christmas cards. Several years later, upon finishing a master course in the subject, I started to sell my calligraphy cards and artwork, and teaching class. I moved to the U.S. in 2008, and I still have continued to work with my calligraphy. Also, my participation in arts and crafts fairs have increased year by year. I love nature, so many of my works are inspired by nature, especially the ocean. I always think I want to express my feelings with letters. Also, I love making Japanese crafts, origami cranes and mizuhiki, then I combine them all to make cards and earrings etc... I like to talk with my customers, and I miss live events, but I can't help it during these times. So, I have used Etsy since last summer. Even though it’s an online shop, please feel free to contact me. I like to communicate with my customers!
Our Nikkei Matsuri Connection
I am Japanese, I moved to California from Japan 12 years ago. I always think about Japan, so I am relieved when I am at Nikkei Matsuri because of the sounds, smells, sights, atmosphere and people remind me of Japan. I like Nikkei Matsuri! I would like to show my calligraphy with my Japanese taste, and I want many people to be interested in beautiful Japanese arts and crafts at Nikkei Matsuri. I was impressed by the big koi nobori when I participated for the first time. I like all Japanese food, and I like San Jose Taiko’s performances. The beat makes me excited!
