Northern California Naginata Federation

Northern California Naginata Federation

The Northern California Naginata Federation (NCNF) is a non-profit organization that supports the practice of the Japanese martial art of Naginata. Naginata is a Japanese weapon consisting of a curved sword blade mounted to the end of a staff. The tradition of Naginata is unique in that it has been kept alive primarily by women for the last three centuries. Today, the martial art is practiced across the world by people of all ages and backgrounds.

At NCNF, we offer classes in Atarashi (modern) Naginata, which includes both engi (choreographed movements) and shiai (full-contact sparring with bogu, or armor). Our classes are located in the Bay Area, including San Francisco and San Jose. All in-person practices are paused at this time due to the pandemic, but feel free to reach out to us via email or social media if you are interested in learning more about NCNF.

Our Nikkei Matsuri virtual performance will feature voices from our current NCNF members. Find out more about Naginata and why our members decided to start practicing this martial art!

Our Nikkei Matsuri Connection
