Honoree for Raising the Koi
The Nikkei Matsuri Festival in San Jose’s Japantown is a vibrant celebration of Japanese-American culture, heritage, and community spirit. One of the festival’s special traditions is the Raising of the Koi Fish, symbolizing strength, perseverance, and good fortune. Each year, a distinguished community member—someone who has made a lasting impact on the neighborhood—is honored with the privilege of raising the koi. This act not only recognizes their dedication but also reflects the festival’s commitment to preserving and uplifting the rich cultural legacy of Japantown. The event brings together visitors and locals to enjoy traditional food, arts, crafts, and performances while fostering a deep sense of community pride.
